Every year on the 25th of May, we join the celebration of Africa Day – a day dedicated to recognising African unity, independence, cultural diversity, and the continent’s ongoing development journey.
Within INCiTiS-FOOD, Africa Day represents an important moment to recognise the role of African communities, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and Living Labs in developing locally adapted circular solutions for sustainable food systems.
The Origins of Africa Day
Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On that day, leaders from 30 independent African countries came together to establish a continental organisation focused on unity and cooperation.
The creation of the OAU marked a significant moment in African history. Many African nations had recently gained independence, while others were still fighting against colonialism. The organisation aimed to strengthen solidarity among African states, support liberation movements, and encourage political and economic cooperation across the continent.
In 2002, the OAU evolved into the African Union (AU), which continues to promote continental integration, peace, development, and cooperation among African countries.
Today, Africa Day is celebrated not only across Africa, but also by African diaspora communities around the world. The day highlights the continent’s cultural richness, diversity, achievements, and aspirations for the future.
The Importance of Africa Day
Africa Day remains important because it represents more than a historical anniversary. It is a reminder of the importance of unity, cooperation, and locally driven development in addressing shared challenges and opportunities across the continent.
Over the decades, Africa has experienced significant social, political, economic, and technological transformation. At the same time, many communities continue to face challenges related to food security, climate change, water access, sanitation, unemployment, and sustainable resource management.
Africa Day, therefore, serves as a moment to reflect on how collaboration, innovation, and community engagement can contribute to long-term development and resilience.
The values behind Africa Day also align closely with the goals of Agenda 2063, the African Union’s strategic framework for inclusive and sustainable development across the continent. Agenda 2063 focuses on areas such as economic growth, environmental sustainability, education, innovation, regional integration, and improved quality of life for African citizens.
Africa Day 2026: Celebrating Unity, Integration and Development
This year, Africa Day is celebrated under the theme: Sixty-three (63) Years of Unity, Integration and Development, let’s celebrate together.
The theme reflects on the progress made since the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963. More than six decades after African leaders came together to promote unity and self-determination, Africa Day remains an opportunity to celebrate the continent’s cultural diversity, innovation, achievements, and growing role in addressing global challenges.
At the same time, the celebration also encourages reflection on the work that still lies ahead in areas such as sustainable development, climate resilience, food security, education, and economic opportunity.
Alongside the Africa Day celebrations, the African Union has also declared the theme of the year 2026: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.
The theme places water and sanitation among the continent’s key political and development priorities, recognising their importance for public health, agriculture, food production, environmental sustainability, economic development, and climate resilience.
Reflecting the Spirit of Africa Day Through Local Action
The work carried out within INCiTiS-FOOD strongly reflects both the Africa Day 2026 celebration theme, “Sixty-three (63) Years of Unity, Integration and Development, let’s celebrate together,” and the African Union’s 2026 Theme of the Year focused on sustainable water availability and sanitation systems.
At the core of INCiTiS-FOOD is collaboration. Through Living Labs established across six African countries, the project brings together researchers, students, entrepreneurs, farmers, and community members to co-create practical circular solutions adapted to local conditions and needs.
In recent months, the Living Labs organised Open Days, workshops, Roadshows, and training sessions aimed at encouraging knowledge exchange and community participation. These activities created opportunities for local stakeholders to engage directly with circular technologies implemented within the Living Labs, including aquaponics, hydroponics, insect farming, and other sustainable food production systems.
Beyond supporting innovation and entrepreneurship at the local level, these technologies also reflect the project’s commitment to more sustainable resource management. Many of the systems implemented within INCiTiS-FOOD are designed to reuse and recycle resources, reduce waste, and minimise the use of chemical pesticides while maintaining efficient food production practices.
This approach is particularly relevant in the context of the African Union’s 2026 theme focused on water and sanitation. Technologies such as aquaponics and hydroponics rely on responsible water management and water recirculation systems, helping reduce unnecessary water consumption while maintaining clean and controlled production environments. By promoting circular approaches and environmentally conscious practices, the project contributes to broader discussions around sustainability, climate resilience, food security, and responsible resource use.
Looking Ahead
More than sixty years after the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, Africa Day continues to represent a shared commitment to cooperation, development, and collective progress across the continent.
It is both a celebration of achievements and a reminder of the work that remains ahead. From sustainable food systems and water management to education, entrepreneurship, and climate resilience, the challenges facing communities today require collaborative and locally driven solutions.
