In December 2024, the INCiTiS-FOOD project launched its first Open Call, inviting external consortia to propose solutions based on circular agri-food technologies. The aim was to support practical, locally grounded projects that apply approaches such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and insect farming in real conditions. Selected consortia receive funding to implement their ideas and contribute to more sustainable city-region food systems.
Among the selected projects is CIWACIWE (City Waste for Increased City Food and Wealth), implemented in Nigeria, which focuses on linking urban waste management with food production. The initiative explores how organic waste streams can be redirected into agricultural use, supporting both food production and local livelihoods.
From Urban Waste to Agricultural Input
CIWACIWE is based on a simple but practical idea: materials that are often treated as waste can be reused as inputs in food production systems. Instead of relying entirely on external resources, the project works with locally available materials and by-products, turning them into useful components for farming.
The approach combines circular resource use with urban agriculture, contributing to more efficient use of available inputs. In this context, technologies such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and insect-based systems are used as part of an integrated model. These systems are designed to operate with limited space and resources, making them suitable for urban environments where land and inputs are often constrained.
Activities and Local Implementation
The work within CIWACIWE goes beyond system setup. The project also focuses on how these solutions are introduced and used in practice. This includes training activities, demonstrations, and the development of a Local Innovation Hub where different elements of the system can be tested and adapted.
In addition to technical implementation, the project places emphasis on knowledge sharing and practical learning. Training sessions are designed to support participants in understanding not only how the systems work, but also how they can be maintained and adapted over time.
Farmers, small businesses, and other local actors are involved in this process. Rather than large-scale deployment from the start, the project emphasises gradual adoption and practical use. This allows participants to engage with the technologies step by step and understand how they fit within existing practices.
Such an approach reflects the way INCiTiS-FOOD Living Labs operate, where solutions are tested in real conditions, adjusted where needed, and shaped through direct involvement of local communities.
The Partners Behind the Project
CIWACIWE is implemented by a local consortium bringing together three organisations with complementary roles and experience.
African Projects Development Centre works on development initiatives that focus on innovation, training, and economic opportunities at the community level.
Harvest Value Chain Limited contributes practical experience in agricultural value chains, including implementation and support for farming activities.
Ijebu Development Initiative on Poverty Reduction is focused on community development and poverty reduction, with strong links to local stakeholders.
Together, these organisations combine technical, organisational, and community-based experience, supporting the implementation of the project in a way that is both practical and locally relevant.
Looking Ahead
Through its activities, CIWACIWE aims to demonstrate how circular approaches can be applied in urban food systems, linking waste management with food production in a way that is both functional and adaptable. The project contributes to ongoing efforts within INCiTiS-FOOD to test and refine solutions that respond to local conditions while addressing broader challenges related to food and nutrition security.
