INCiTiS-FOOD Featured in New Video Interviews
In the previous period, INCiTiS-FOOD partners and researchers have been featured in video interviews highlighting innovative approaches to sustainable food production in African urban and peri-urban areas. These stories offer a closer look at how circular technologies are being applied in real contexts to strengthen local food systems.
One of the featured researchers is Sister Monica Awino Omondi, a PhD student at Egerton University, Kenya, whose work focuses on the use of natural fertilisers derived from fish and black soldier fly manure. Her research examines how indigenous African vegetables such as nightshade, amaranth, and cowpeas respond to these fertilisers, offering insights into more sustainable and resource-efficient methods of local food production.
Another interview features Charity Kelsy from the Nakuru Living Lab at Egerton University, who shares her experience in developing and applying aquaponics, insect farming, and other circular technologies in urban and peri-urban settings. In conversation with Caleb Koyo, she reflects on the practical challenges and opportunities of implementing sustainable food systems at the local level.
Highlights from Events
- In June, our partner, Sunlight Future Africa, took part in a dissemination workshop at 3ZERO House, Kenya, presenting the latest outputs of the INCiTiS-FOOD project. 3ZERO House Kenya is a vibrant innovation hub in Nairobi dedicated to tackling poverty, social exclusion, and environmental challenges. It empowers emerging innovators and connects them with key stakeholders. With a strong focus on climate justice and inclusive economic growth, the hub serves as a platform for entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, and community groups. By sharing insights from INCiTiS-FOOD, Sunlight Future Africa contributed to conversations on circular food systems and climate-smart solutions for Africa’s urban and peri-urban communities.
- Kenyatta University was present at the Nairobi International Trade Fair (NITF) — the largest trade fair in East Africa. Held annually from late September to early October, the seven-day event brings together innovators, businesses, and communities. At the INCiTiS-FOOD stand, the Living Lab team presented circular technologies and value-added products that demonstrate sustainable pathways for food production.
- This october INCiTiS-FOOD was part of this year’s Annual Colloquium “Risk, Infrastructure, Security und Conflict” hosted by the RISK Research Center at Bundeswehr University Munich. Our partners from Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) GmbH, Bundeswehr University Munich, and Bamenda University Of Science & Technology shared insights into how circular urban agriculture can boost both individual and community resilience in African cities. In line with the colloquium’s theme, INCiTiS-FOOD showcases how innovative infrastructures and risk-aware governance can strengthen local economies, promote stability, and foster resilience through sustainable food systems.
- The University of Ibadan Living Lab represented INCiTiS-FOOD at the 2nd Africa in Transition Conference and Trade Show 2025, held at the University of Ghana, Legon. During the plenary session on Sustainable Development, Risk Reduction, and Balanced Growth, the team presented insights into how INCiTiS-FOOD contributes to these goals and lessons learned during the project.
Second e-Discussion on the Synergy Portal: Focus on Spider Plant
The second e-discussion on the Synergy Portal has now concluded. It focused on the Spider Plant (Cleome gynandra), an indigenous African vegetable with high nutritional value and strong potential for urban farming systems. Participants were invited to share their experiences with cultivating spider plant in hydroponic systems, including practical insights on what has worked well and what challenges have been encountered. The discussion also encouraged contributions such as digital case studies, farm management tools, and experimental trials related to this crop.
The third e-discussion is going to be launched soon, so make sure to follow Synergy Portal, our Newsroom, and social media channels for updates.
