FROM WASTE TO RESOURCE: Implementing BSF and Bokashi Technologies for a Circular Food System in Nakuru County

The institutions involved:

Engineers without borders Israel

Camlpo limited

Keriko secondary school

Description of consortium's main objectives:

The consortium aims at dealing with two challenges concerning African urban and peri-urban populations – improving availability and access of fresh and nutritious food from neighboring farms and disposal of organic waste from markets and other sources. It establishes a circular food system in Nakuru County (Kenya) by recycling organic waste from the local market into BSF (Black soldier fly) feed for chicken and BSF fortified Bokashi fertilizer, enabling sustainable year-round production of eggs and vegetables for self consumption and the (peri) urban markets. It develops a farmers’ groups’ business model, engaging entrepreneurs in sustainable production and marketing, and conducts local R&D to ensure that practices are effective and strengthen food security, livelihoods, and environmental resilience.
