Aquaponics for Catfish, Integrated Tomato & Edible Vegetables

The institutions involved:

Yaba College of
Technology (YABATECH)

Cooperative Agricultural Multipurpose Society Limited (Agric Cooperative)

Description of consortium's main objectives:

The consortium brings together the Cooperative Agricultural Multipurpose Society Limited (Agric Cooperative) and Yaba College of Technology to jointly develop, demonstrate, and scale a simplified, flow-through aquaponics system integrating catfish, Celosia (Lagos spinach), tomato, and bell pepper. Working as a unified team, the consortium aims to strengthen circular, climate-smart food production for urban and peri-urban communities in Lagos.

  • Design and deploy eight simplified flow-through aquaponics units across farmer cohorts in Lagos, integrating catfish farming with the cultivation of Celosia argentea, tomato, and bell peppeStrengthen the capacity of 80 direct beneficiaries through targeted technical and socio-economic training on aquaponics management, crop-fish integration, biosecurity, and cooperative marketing.
  • Enhance household food and nutrition security by supporting farmers to produce fish and vegetables for their own consumption, while generating surplus for market sales within the first year of implementation.
  • Promote inclusive livelihood opportunities by deliberately engaging women and youth groups, ensuring their active participation in aquaponics adoption and cooperative structures.
  • Create a scalable and replicable aquaponics model that demonstrates the potential for circular, resource-efficient food systems and supports replication in other peri-urban communities in Lagos and beyond.
