Study cases from Kenya
Under the Partnership Agreement signed in the previous months, the INCiTiS-FOOD and EWA-BELT Projects are launching a series of webinars to address current challenges and potential solutions in the agri-food sector in Kenya, Ghana and Sierra Leone.
Save the date! June 11, 2024, on Zoom, 10:00 am (CEST).
The first of this cycle of webinars will focus on “Enhancing Crop Production: Innovative Techniques and Sustainable Practices” in Kenya. On June 11, 2024 at 10:00 am (CEST), the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Egerton University and Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), together with the University of Sassari, OCCAM – Observatory on Digital Communication and Foodscale Hub, will shed light on the diverse sustainable crop production technologies evaluated and tested within the Projects across Kenyan regions.
Empowering African Agriculture
With African countries suffering from high levels of food and nutrition insecurity exacerbated by the increasing impact of climate change on agricultural production and the non-stopping growth of the population, agricultural systems are at a crucial crossroads, between family and subsistence farming systems, conventional intensive models and emerging agro-ecological approaches.
The current challenge is to meet several issues simultaneously: i) increasing productivity while generating sufficient income for smallholders and family farmers; ii) reversing the current trend towards simplification of agricultural landscapes, soil degradation and loss of biodiversity; iii) reducing the number of people experiencing hunger, and micronutrient deficiencies; iv) increase in consumption of protein-rich food; and v) waste management.
Insights from Experts
In pursuit of bolstering crop production while promoting sustainable intensification approaches and cutting-edge circular agri-food technologies, practices, and business models, presentations on “Performance of selected technologies for improvement of groundnut farming in the Lake Victoria Basin” by Prof. Sheila Okoth from the University of Nairobi, on “Harnessing the value of forgotten crops in cereal legume rotations” by Director Noel Nekesa Makete from KALRO, “Suitable African leafy vegetables for various aquaponics (hydroponics) systems in Kenya” by Dr. Ibrahim Macharia and “Production of fruit and African leafy vegetables using BSF frass and fish sludge in an aquaponic system” by Prof. Arnold Opiyo will outline the most promising research endeavors, on site experiences and achieved results while also discussing about the potential scalability and adoption of these practices to fortify food security and resilience within agriculture in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa, thus enriching the current plethora of instances of reference and empowering stakeholders at all levels to shape the future of food in the entire continent.
The panellists will showcase their presentations and open the floor for a discussion with the audience. The insights emerging from the webinar will be collected and reviewed to draft recommendations and suggestions for stakeholders where applicable and appropriate.
